TV producer Richard Cook clearly has a creative mind. Check out his Instagram channel and you’ll see he’s made it one of the most inspirational and viewable out there. In fact, just spooling though the super colourful and occasionally hilarious pics, you actually feel like summer’s arrived! Here, Richard explains why he decided to inject some colour into his life.
This time last year I made a resolution to make my Instagram more interesting. Looking back over my posts in 2015 I think I achieved my goal, but when I see naked shots of myself with nothing but a banana hiding my modesty – I think ‘did I go mad?’.
At the end of 2014 I was really annoyed at how dull my Instagram had become; it was just a load of lazy holiday snaps, drunken selfies, at one point, a horse’s arse – it wasn’t very inspiring stuff. I wanted to do something that would challenge me creatively and hopefully be more interesting to people beyond my circle of friends.
I hit on the idea of creating a rainbow flag in pictures and started taking photos – a different colour, a different month. The first six months was, looking back, pretty pedestrian. The colour theme although a challenge, still resulted in pictures of my mates, or drunken selfies, albeit this time against that months colour theme.
In July of last year, I decided to have another go at doing a rainbow flag but this time being more considered – really thinking about making the colour the focus, nothing but white, (or flesh) with the only colour on show being that months theme.
I spent ages thinking of ideas, props or funny scenarios to hopefully make people smile. Every Saturday I’d get my camera out and take pictures against my white kitchen wall. Some I’ll admit were a bit dull (I took a picture of an orange for orange month – zzzz), some I hope were funny (I literally have egg on my face in one picture), and some I know are pretty nuts (I spray painted a chicken blue to celebrate Thanksgiving).
Looking back, in my times of paranoia I worry I look like an old man having a public mid life crisis – what right-minded 42 year old lets a candle melt all over their head, or slam their face in to a birthday cake? It’s not particularly normal behaviour is it, but I honestly had a lot of fun doing it. It became my silly little hobby for a year and when I scroll through the pictures fast enough I’m pleased to see two rainbow flags.
This year I’ve decided to keep the colour theme going but take pictures of interesting, inspiring people in the LGBT community – so far I haven’t asked anyone to pose naked with a banana – but there’s time yet.
Below are Richard’s latest Instagram shots, but check out his channel and be amazed by his stunning technicolor images!
Dave The Bear is officially the UKs number one male burlesque performer. Not bad for someone who has only been doing it since 2009. His performance has been described as “marvellous, funny, and wickedly cheeky” by Attitude Magazine and “properly sexy” by Coldplay’s Chris Martin (I’m not kidding). If you get to see him perform it’s a night you won’t forget as Dave leaves little to the imagination 👀! He’s the winner of a London Cabaret Award for best performer, and the People’s Choice Award at the Vienna Boylesque Festival. You might have seen him appear on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown last year performing a synchronised swimming routine – a sketch which went on to win Best Comedy Moment at the British Comedy Awards. He even has a 2016 Calendar which you can buy at davethebear.com or follow his IG and twitter @bighairygrowler. He's one of my favourite people, just don't get him started about J-Lo
Matt Henry’s performance as Lola in the West End production of Kinky Boots was described by The Telegraph as a “Tour de Force” and by Hollywood News as “Flawless" and “Dazzling”. Matt himself describes it as one of the hardest things he’s ever done – but he may be referring to the high heeled boots he has to dance in each night. The thing no one can argue about, when it comes to Matt (apart from him being the loveliest of men) is his truly incredible singing voice. He won a legion of fans as a finalist in Series 2 of the BBC talent show The Voice and last year he released his debut album Red Flare. It’s a brilliant soulful collection of ten stunning songs. Go see Matt in Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre in London now, buy his album Red Flare on iTunes and follow him on twitter and instagram @Mrmatthenry. Thank you Matt for letting me take this picture on New Years Eve after a massively exhausting week for you – legend.
This is Doctor Ranj Singh. As a Paediatrician at a London hospital he works to improve the lives of sick children. You'll also find him hosting the BBC show Get Well Soon (which he co-created) singing ridiculously catchy tunes like "The Poo Song" and "Wee Wee Bug" (YouTube them!), or talking about more serious matters on ITVs This Morning and BBCs Inside Out. More than all this though Dr Ranj has genuinely one of the biggest hearts of any man you could meet, he's funny, kind and a self confessed geek. Follow him on IG & Twitter @drranj. #red
