Director at L’Oreal Foundation David MacDonald shares his coming out story…
I went to an all-boys grammar school in the 80s & 90s; coming out at that stage would have been out of the question for many reasons.
I lost my mother when I was 16 but I told my Dad when I was 19. He was supportive and told me he always thought it was no surprise. He was great.
Looking back I probably walked away from some friendships unnecessarily, worried to broach the subject. I have some gay friends mostly younger than me that do not associate with the term ‘coming out’.
I don’t necessarily envy them and look back happily at a time that was daunting but in other ways exciting and full of discovery.
If I had my time again I would panic less and create less self-induced disruption in my life.
