Sam Smith did something amazing this week. He posted a picture of himself stripped to the waist on a beach to announce that he was “reclaiming his body”.

In the brilliant and inspiring post he wrote about how in the past he had endured crash diets to prepare for photo shoots but was now happy in his own skin.

“In the past if I have ever done a photo shoot with so much as a t-shirt on,” he write. “I have starved myself for weeks in advance and then picked and prodded at every picture and then normally taken the picture down.

“Yesterday I decided to fight the fuck back. Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally. Some may take this as narcissistic and showing off but if you knew how much courage it took to do this and the body trauma I have experienced as a kid you wouldn’t think those things.”

He added: “Thank you for helping me celebrate my body AS IT IS @ryanpfluger I have never felt safer than I did with you. I’ll always be at war with this bloody mirror but this shoot and this day was a step in the right fucking direction.”

Well done to Sam Smith for being so open about his body woes. Most of us are normal guys with normal bodies and look bloody great! But also it is important that we not – as a lot people tend to do – harass gym goers for sculpting their bodies. We all come in different shapes and sizes and some work hard on creating a certain look. And good luck to them. Some of us actual like to look at them as much as we love soigné in Sam’s! So boys, let’s enjoy all types of body shapes and not lash out at those who do actually want take time to look as good as they want.

Amen and goodnight.
